First step is to have Public Works inspect the location and make a determination about the sidewalk. If there is a city factor impacting the sidewalk's condition (ie. tree) then the city is responsible for grinding/repair. If damage is caused by wear/tear/neglect and would pose a safety hazard, we at Public Works will try to alleviate the hazard by patching it and then deem a full repair is the "resident's responsibility".
In some cases, if area being impacted is severe and involves more than one address, area can be reviewed by the Resource Allocation Committee for a major project. Engineering would oversee new sidewalk replacements.
We at Public Works will always work with property owners to explore how best to get the work done.
I’ve reported this for a couple years but they want their tax money every year right, I’m just assuming it will get fixed once someone trips and files the lawsuit they are waiting on! City of New Haven is reactive not proactive!!!
Also it’s right in front of a city on New Haven owned home, so it’s no question of working with the property. The people living there are on section 8, so just fix it already there’s no grinding to be done it’s been inspected once already
I email the city of new haven last year about a tree in front of 552 554 russell street that was very sick and almost ready to collapse at any given day.To my surprise they sent someone on day number 3 after my report of the tree and they tagged it" to be removed within 10 days of this notice". By day number 8 we were having severe windy rain and thunder storms and guess what the tree collapse and ripped the sidewalk and nearly took the roof of my house and the fence. I called the police and explained to them that a tree had fallen in front of the house and it was posing a danger to the public. They sent out public works out that night and they finish removing the tree and clean the area."Nice job". However the city is well aware that the side walk is damaged because they were there and i ive sent pictures of the damaged side walk and emails and nothing has been done. If THE CiTY OF NEW HAVEN wouldve addressed the problem with there tree and i first of reported it this serious problem wouldnt exist!
