I Hope the city will pay attention to the speeding issues on birdsall this time and go beyond unnecessary bureaucracy to avoid changes.
A long section from kingsland to Morcom has no stop sign, no speed bumps. The rest of birdsall has stops and speed bumps.
Monticello has so many speed bumps and stops and it helps make it safer.
Car speed on birdsall day and night, several people were almost hit in the last 3 years. A car escaped 3 weeks ago after shooting a Neighboor and had no obstacle to slow them down such as speed bumps. If pedestrian were there at that time they would have been hit. The speeding is constant.
While the confusion is understandable, the new cross walk painted, at least, makes drivers pay more attention at a section of a street presenting increasing risks due to speeding.
Let’s hope the new signs will make the city act in a timely manner and change for the better and for our safety.

As citizens who've been trying for years to achieve change through legal means, we understand the concerns. Our main goal has always been to make the intersection safer for everyone in our community.
We've repeatedly asked the city to address safety issues at Birdsall and Camden specifically and Maxwell Park in general, seeking measures to slow down traffic and create safer pedestrian crossings. Sadly, our efforts have not resulted in significant action from the city.
We feel frustrated and helpless when our concerns are ignored. In talking to city agencies many of us have been told that the causes of violent crime are complex and their resources meager. We have heard from OPD that they are understaffed and that we should explore alternatives like environmental design and more neighborhood connection and activity to increase our sense of safety. We have heard from OakDOT and AC Transit that any environmental changes to our streets that make terrible crimes harder to commit are years away. We have heard that David Schneider’s death is not sufficient to catalyze change and that it certainly isn’t the result of any one agency's inaction or apathy. Which is true. The causes of violence are complex and there is not one set of interventions or one set of laws or one government agency that can eliminate evil from the world.
The makeshift crosswalks were not meant to defy the law but to draw attention to the urgency of the situation. They symbolize our determination to take action when faced with inaction and our commitment to the memory of Dave Schneider.
Our actions are driven by a deep sense of responsibility and care for our community's well-being. We want to find common ground with the city and make the necessary changes that protect and benefit everyone in our neighborhood.
I appreciate your concern for the safety and well-being of our neighborhood. 🩷
