It would help to have lots of speed limit signs posted along that stretch. There aren't any until you get to New Haven. I was hit in a collision on a rainy day close to the intersection of Whitney and Davis.

I have been involved with a traffic calming group in Hamden for over two years, and we have made little progress. It is a well-known fact that speed limit signs have little - if any - effect on speed control. Since effective police enforcement of existing traffic regulations seems unlikely in the near future, the only answer is the installation of physical traffic control measures such as speed humps, chicanes, bump-outs and rotaries - see the resources available on the traffic calming page at www.hamden.com.

Despite the best of intentions, no recent administration, regardless of the personalities involved or party affiliation, had made much progress in the area of traffic control. Until issues such as speeding through residential neighborhoods and running red lights are addressed adequately, traffic control in our town will remain a travesty.

We need to speed things up on all of our major roads. This town had about 10 to 15 thousand people when the streets where built. Now we have over 65 thousand people on these same "OLD" streets. Time to GROW the town to fit the population we have now!

Much faster after we widen the roads to fit the population and get rid of the parked cars on the main roads. We are not living in the 1920 any more. It is time to move the parking to municipal parking lots that already exist and widen the roads with state backed eminent domain for the good of the majority of the population. It is more than time. This has got to happen soon and I will write to my state senator to get the ball rolling.

I respectfully disagree that traffic on Whitney Avenue should be sped up. It goes plenty fast enough now, especially in light of the fact that many drivers weave from lane to lane while talking on a cell phone, with one hand on the steering wheel and their minds on anything but the road. The road is supposed to serve not only those who are in a hurry, but also those who tend to drive more carefully, cyclists, and pedestrians (many of whom are senior citizens) who need to cross the street safely. There are several businesses, a church, and a school along this section of Whitney Ave, and their needs are just as important as those of the selfish, inconsiderate, and unsafe drivers who tend to care only about themselves. Maybe those who are in such a hurry should consider using the interstate instead.

The town certainly hasn't done much to improve the safety of the streets in the Whitneyville neighborhood, despite the efforts of concerned residents who actually live here. It is a known fact that cars parked along the road are effective at slowing traffic, and so I hope that the elimination of on-street parking does not become a reality in our neighborhood.

Parking on Whitney will only make it "LESS" safe for all. The cars that are "WEAVING" are doing so because of the parked cars. You all need to wake up and look at the population and usage of the town and this road to see it is time to get rid of the parked cars just FOR THE SAFETY concerns.

The Whitneyville community so far has been mistakenly represented by one monopolized group of civic crusaders. Other view and idea need to be and will be aired from this point forward. One of the many ideas is no Frank, we do not need or want "no passing" stripes or more signs. (unless you want to widen the road by adding turn lanes at Putnum and Whitney)

Still swerving ans speeding in spring glen and whitneyville. Today on the way to work I am going to see how many speed limit signs there are. I don't recall seeing any!!!!

Between Santa Fe and Davis st there are no speed limit signs until you get to Hamden hall. They are a 100 feet apart. One says 25. The other 30!

Specific problems
1. There a very few speed limit signs between skiff and lake Whitney!
2. Typical speed is well over 40 mph.
3. Many drivers exceed that and swerve from one lane to another when then encounter slower drivers
4 turning onto Whitney can be a death defying act

Speed limit sign are located on Whitney. How have you determined the speed of traffic? How much over is well over? Turning onto Whitney from where?

I think Frank would be better off traveling an alternate route. Perhaps he needs another hobby, something besides posting foolishness here.
I'm not surprised that little progress has been made with traffic calming measures here in Hamden. These measures actually impede the flow of traffic and are quite annoying....perhaps they have a place on extremely low-use roads, but they certainly have no place on a major thoroughfare like WHitney Avenue!
