There remains snow and ice in the bike lanes on Orange St. This forces cyclists out into the lane if they want to remain upright. Or, if they slip they may slip into oncoming traffic, leading to injury or fatality. The lanes need clearing.
By the way, these bike lanes are already unsafe, with the risk of dooring from parked cars. Sharrows would be better.
I imagine this is all over the city, though I just saw it on Orange St. The cyclist in the bike lane was struggling to make it through safely during rush hour traffic.

You should stay out of the bike lanes anyway, unless you want to get doored.
Seriously though, the city doesn't have the funds to make every little nook and cranny safe. Use some common sense and street smarts and you'll be fine. 10 year olds in the Hill seem to be able to get around the streets without a problem, why can't college kids figure out how to do the same?

Hi, Pringles! I think you missed the point.
There's a problem on streets with bike lanes where motorists often expect cyclists to stay all the way to the right. (Cyclists should not be doing this anyway when there are cars parked there, but that's another matter.) There is no way to stay to the right of the travel lane when there is ice there. The city has the balance of encouraging good travel for all vehicles and managing public safety. If the city expects cyclists to use the bike lanes (which, they really shouldn't), they need to be cleared just the same. It's not about cyclists figuring out how to use the road, it's about preventing harassment from impatient drivers - the real problem.
