I forgot to add - traffic on 6th Street has AT LEAST doubled since Webster went down to one lane. People use 6th Street as an alternative. There really needs to be a 4-way stop at this intersection! Please!

another dog walker here. i absolutely agree. flow needs to be dealt with as ppl race down sixth AND 5th street to get between lincoln and webster. way too many close calls here in our neighborhood.

Please make the intersection of Haight and 6th a controlled 4-way stop intersection. Since Webster reduced from 2 lanes to 1 at Lincoln—6th st has become a more common thoroughfare and dangerous for pedestrians and bicyclists. I passed by a car accident there this morning! Please review this intersection ASAP.

Agreed. A four way stop is required here. Drivers on Haight cannot see oncoming traffic on 6th St until they are already in the intersection. This is very dangerous - as evidenced by the accident today which resulted in a car in someone's front yard, and many close calls I have witnessed as a resident at this location. If someone is hurt here, or worse, I wouldn't be surprised if they took legal action against the city.

Build a roundabout instead, since the drivers would actually be forced to slow down compared to a stop sign where drivers can chose to ingnore with no consequences expect fines.

People also ignore yielding in a roundabout. Not a good solution.

1. Federal Hwy Admin. studies show significant accident reduction when employing roundabouts.
2. Also, four way stops, properly applied, are safer than two way stops.
3. Some drivers on the 400 to 600 blocks of Haight Ave & the 1500 block of 5th & 6th Streets contribute to UNSAFE streets, traveling at speeds TOO FAST for the conditions. This behavior is especially prevalent during morning and evening commute times. I do know that a Haight & 5th Street accident survey was done; according to Traffic Engineering (TE), the LACK of accidents & 25 to 27 mph average speed did not justify an all way stop.
However, near misses are not measured and, as stated above, all way Stops are safer than two way stops; roundabouts are safer than both.
Parts of Oakland, about Rockridge, seems to recognize how to make streets safer---they've installed both roundabouts and all way stops.
The City of Alameda TE could easily look toward the success of Rockridge, use discretion and common sense to effectively make our streets truly safer.

We need a four way stop at 6th and Haight. I go through that intersection every day and it is dangerous.

This is truly a neighborhood safety issue, spanning multiple blocks.
5th & Haight, Linden & Haight & 6th & Haight require better safety solutions.

i come from a few blocks away but 100% agree with everything said above. walking solo or with the dog has become increasingly more dangerous, especially the last few years. ppl simply do not stop for peds and the speeds are ridiculous for these neighborhood streets. the west end deserves your attention on our streets. thank you.

Thank you for reporting your concerns about street safety in Alameda. As part of the pavement resurfacing program, last year the City implemented improvements along this stretch of Haight Street, including new daylighting, and new and refreshed crosswalk markings. In 2022 the City of Alameda did an all-way stop evaluation for 5th St and Haight nearby, and the analysis did not recommend an all-way stop due to the relatively low auto traffic volume on Haight Ave.

The City uses High Injury Corridor maps to prioritize on traffic safety improvements where they are needed most, supplemented by equity indicators and public feedback. High Injury Corridors are the stretches of road with the highest densities of injury crashes, weighted by severity, based on ten years of crash data. Your report will help inform the City of Alameda’s work to achieve our Vision Zero goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and severe injuries. Dear Transportation Planning - Traffic on 6th Street has increased at least 80% since the changes on Webster street. It is now used as a getaround, and I'm wondering if the city took that into account at all. There needs to be a way to reduce traffic speed on 6th Street - people drive 40-50 miles an hour down our residential street. PLEASE listen to all of these neighbors and help make our neighborhood more safe. Most people don't even really stop at the signs at 6th and Santa Clara. PLEASE install speed bumps or a roundabout. Those speed cushions could really help.

Hello, I am a neighbor that lives on the 500 block of Haight Ave. This process has been very frustrating. We do not have access to a garage and the red zones have negatively impacted parking for me and my two young kids. This morning, as I was putting my son into his car seat, a car flew down the block going way over the speed limit. This happens very often! I have noticed that many cars used to do a slow stop when they got to the park (linden street), mostly I think out of confusion or caution. Now that the red zones allow drivers to see more clearly, the speeding has increased. Linden really should not be a two way street. It is narrow and I agree with the comments above. Alameda Arts Program will have a full summer camp at Longfellow Park and I am worried about parking over the summer while trying to gather my kids and their belongings from my car to our home. The Farmer's market also creates limited street parking. This area is populated and needs remedies for our parking and speeding problems. How can a public park and tennis court be surrounded by streets and NO stop signs? It really doesn't make sense to me. Please hear our calls.
