Not sure what they are up to but they have now removed the surface on several other parts of this road. It is a dangerous road to begin with but extra dangerous with this bad surface - especially on a motorcycle!
This is a feature not a bug; the streets dept intentionally ground up the roadbed to decrease accidents. Unfortunately when wet with leaves this surface seems as dangerous as the original asphalt.. The real issue by the police station seems to be the curve coupled with FWD vehicles and pickup trucks who shouldn't be on the road in the first place. I'd also love to see the lincoln drive truck ban extended to SUVs.

Dan, have you driven this road? Clearly not as this road is in appalling shape with some sections paved and others are all torn up. It is unsafe and a hazard to cars and motorcycles!
The part of the road that is being referred in the complaint was scarified to improve vehicle traction. I suspect that it also may be meant to try to slow vehicles down.
The scarified section ends with a clear division between the paved section and the scarified section which shows that it was intentional. It has not been a hazard on the hundreds of times I have driven this section. The rest of the road is a mess but this section is designed to be this way.
This is laughable if it wasn't so sad that a "scarified" road is considered acceptable. The scarification is haphazard at best and dangerous for people like me who also ride a motorcycle.
I am glad you acknowledge the rest of the road is a mess - it is and is dangerous because of the pot holes, the cracks, the sunken drains and other hazards.
I've always thought that one of the simplest things that should be applied to this road is either cats-eyes or dots between the lanes to try and reduce the amount of people slipping in and out of lane.
I am amazed that nothing is being done about this road. You can also tell half of the people commenting do not use Lincold Drive. From Gypsy Lane to Wissahickon Ave the road has so many filled pot holes and "scarified" surfaces that it is an emabarrassment! I cannot believe the city/state have allowed this to continue this long. Amazing!
I believe that shortly after the area between Ridge and Gypsy Lane was repaved there was a serious accident or a series of serious accidents at this location that led to the surface being scarified. It was done on purpose to improve traction when it is wet. Those accidents are the reason why you see a police car sitting on area btw the the north and southbound lanes near Ridge Ave. The police officer is there to slow traffic down.
I understand the surface grinding was intentional and have been on MANY roads with intentional treatment for traction. These are usually right near the signs that read "grooved pavement ahead". What they have done with Lincoln Drive is take a road that already had thousand of potholes and ground the surface - creating even more potholes and safety concerns. Good intentions are sometimes idiotically executed. I disagree that anyone could argue that the condition of Lincoln Drive is an acceptable model for how to deal with speeding. It is an embarrassment to the city (and state).
1. Wet/slippery/icy
2. Poor road surface
3. Drivers who don't stay in their lane
4. Speeding
I think this is a state maintained road so the state needs to do the following.
1. Correct the seepage/drainage issues so the road surface doesn't pool the water which causes many of the accidents. This is especially true in the winter when any pooled water freezes and causes the majority of accidents.
2. Repave the whole damn road, top to bottom, so drivers aren't weaving and swerving to avoid the holes, bumps and other irregularities in the pavement.
3. Add cats eyes, bumps or scarification to the lane dividers so drivers know when they are not staying in their lane.
4. I'll plead the 5th on the speeding issue...
I understood this to be part of the ongoing bridge reconstruction over Ridge Ave rather than any attempt to improve traction. Removing the surface would not improve traction at all; it would actually decrease traction. Tires have more traction the more surface area touches the road. By removing the surface layer and creating an uneven surface, much less of a tire's surface area comes into contact with the road and grip is reduced tremendously.
THERE ARE COUNTLESS DEEP POTHOLES IN BOTH DIRECTIONS OF LINCOLN DRIVE BETWEEN RIDGE AND WISSIHICKON. THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BEFORE SOMEONE LOOSES AN ENTIRE TIRE!

See, the problem is that without the rough surface every 10th pickup truck that comes around the first turn ends up in the wrong direction.
Yea the surface is terrible but it was INTENTIONAL has resulted in many fewer accidents.
Now if they'd only consider SUV's trucks. I don't understand how a ford ranger is banned but a giant tahoe is ok ..

This road suffers four issues (at least)
1. Wet/slippery/icy
2. Poor road surface
3. Drivers who don't stay in their lane
4. Speeding
